Use a credit card with a merchant-specific bonus plus shop through a cashback portal for maximum savings.

For department stores, a card with a 'shopping' or 'everyday' bonus stacks well. For travel, use a card with a travel bonus. Browse the cards above filtered by category bonus to find the right match.
Annual-fee cards often carry higher category bonuses (5-6% vs 1.5-3%), but you only come out ahead if you spend enough in those categories to offset the fee. Run the math against your annual spend before opting in.
No β clicking through a cashback portal does not affect the payment method. Your card earns its usual points/miles/cashback on the transaction, plus the portal pays additional cashback on top. The two reward streams are independent.
Yes β the portal credits you for the purchase regardless of payment method. But you'll miss out on the credit-card-side rewards stacking. A no-annual-fee rewards credit card is almost always a better choice for portal-tracked purchases.

Save cards to your CashbackAll profile and the store-page 'Best Combo' widget will suggest which of your cards stacks best with each portal's rate. The Chrome extension surfaces the same recommendation on the retailer's checkout page.
Some issuers (Chase Ultimate Rewards, Citi ThankYou) run their own shopping portals where redeeming through the issuer's portal earns extra points/cashback on top of the card's normal earn rate. You can stack THESE with a third-party cashback portal too β but check the issuer's terms carefully as some require you to use their portal exclusively.
